Playing 4 Keeps is an innovative youth media project, in which a team of Global Kids Leaders at South Shore High School are gaining leadership and game design skills that they will use to develop and produce a socially conscious online game each year. Once produced, the game will have the potential to educate thousands of young people about a critical global issue.
About Playing 4 Keeps
Main
1.the experience was ok and I learned the different seating of the people.
2.I was the informant and I learned that they were a main key in the game.
3.yes it did.
4.Mine was the girl that was 17 with the shorts, because she looks agile. Some changes would be torn type clothing.
1. I didn't get the chance to to get in the role-playing but I did participate by telling them what were wrong and right.
2. The character that I voted to be in the game was very great for the game.
Today in GK we learned how to play the game. They showed us an example of the levels. I was actually the main player of the game. In my personal experience as the main character, I felt as though it was important to rescue the people in need. I didn't feel like the character resembled me at all. She had really curly, short hair and it looked like straight hair. She had high cheek bones.
Well I didn't get a chance to experience role playing, but I did view my fellow classmates role play and "What a surprise it was ".
1.In the game my experience grew because I got a better understanding of the game.
2.In the game I played the role of the game.
3.The game gave me a good understanding of the game because I got to know the roles of the characters.
4. I like the giver's role because all they had to do was give supplies to the main character.
Today in global kids me and my classmates were reviewing the game we are creating for the year. While my classmates and I were role playing i found it to be very interesting because we got to act out the description of the game. This gave us a better perspective of what to expect when the game is actually able to play.
The role I played was an observer. I watched as my classmates acted out how the game would be when it is published. I felt that this position for me was really important because this gave me a chance to give the play my undivided attention without distraction.
The character art that i liked the most was the third one of the female wearing the shorts. I liked her the most because she had the most detail to her features comapared to the other women who were demonstrated in the character displays.
Art B does not need anything change because it's fine just the way it is. It can be used in the game
The role-playing game that I have experienced today was kinda fun.
I really personally think that the Concept Art decisions were a bit awkward, but it was fairly acceptable. There were only two pieces of art that were good but I didn't really figure the difference between the two pictures. But instead I chose the the one with the jeans because in that picture, she really look like she was going on a real adventure but really that was the only reason why I chose it.
My experience was that it was fun because I got to learn more about the game that we are making. I also got to learn about the different people in the game like injured people, the givers, the informants, evacuee and the injured evacuee. I was the Evacuee. It was fun. Yes this activity gave me a better understanding of the game because it help us see it so far. I like the third character art because that one looked like a real person to help people. the changes that could be made is that they could add something to her bandanna and they could make her look a little bit more muscular.
My role with playing the different levels of the game was actually a great experience because it gave me a bigger perspective of how the game was. I played a roll of a giver giving supplies to the main character. This activity actually gave me a better understanding of the game. I like the girl with the short pants but I would suggest that she be black because a higher population of New Orleans are black people. And she would be more bigger.I really suggest the girl with the long pants and a timberland boots .
Hello its me Christopher again. Well today we were role playing our game (I was an NPC)
It was, I'll be honest.... Boring. trust me it did not feel like a platformer it felt like an RPG or something slower.
Well we looked at about 5 IMGs. for the concept art and only two ticked my interest. They're both ok so i don't think we can improve on it. (Yeah i like the less is more idea.) well thats it ciao!
On this specific day (Monday, April 28, of 2000...and 8 to be exact and precise), the road to creating our game has continued and let's just say that all of the participants got a first-hand look at what many will come to expect....the only difference, we didn't see anything. Instead, we interpreted one of the levels in the game and i must admit that it was very entertaining in terms of completing the project. My part in this activity was what we call an "Injured Evacuee" (E+) and I assume you already know what I had to do. I must say that I have never had that much fun acting in all my existence. My experience wasn't that much of a freight to me because this wouldn't be the first time I have acted as someone or something I wouldn't normally interpret be it for a project and/or a video/documentary/etc.

Where do I begin on this entry? First of which, it's the second day on what i think is supposed to be Spring Break for all. Second of which, i am currently at the office of Global Kids (Had they not invented trains, i wouldn't be here right now)...Third of all of which, those who affiliate themselves with GK are going bowling! That's right, i said basketball, and we plan to have fun...if not, we will all be bored to tears, but what are the chances of that happening?
This was a huge week at Playing 4 Keeps! A huge gigantic week! I have long been writing in these posts that weâve made progress here and there, this decision and that. Well this week we took a quantum leap and Iâm proud to make two announcements.

We had another short week at Playing 4 Keeps. Due to various unforeseen circumstances, the group was only able to get together on Thursday, but we had an interesting day and our design is moving forward so weâre still feeling good.

We had a short week at Playing 4 Keeps. Our Thursday meeting was canceled because of parent-teacher meetings, but we got some good work done on Monday. We had two simple goals and I think made solid progress on both.

On April 1st, the 110th Congress Subcommittee on Telecommunications and the Internet held a hearing entitled Online Virtual Worlds: Applications and Avatars in a User-Generated Medium.
Listening to the testimony, it was hard not to imagine what I might have shared were I asked to testify. It might have gone something somewhat like this:
Chairman Markey, Ranking Member Stearns, and Members of the Subcommittee, we at Global Kids are honored to have this opportunity to share our experiences as experts working with youth and virtual worlds.
To provide background, in 2006, following extensive research into the educational potential of virtual worlds, Global Kids became the first nonprofit to develop a dedicated space for conducting educational programming in Teen Second Life (TSL). Specifically, Global Kids is conducting intensive leadership programming for youth, bringing students from its New York-based programs into the space, and streaming the audio and video of major events into the world. This work has received significant funding from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, among others, and been conducted in partnership with many other organizations, including UNICEF, the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, and the International Criminal Court.
I would like to begin my testimony with a quote from an earlier Congressional Subcommittee hearing that took place just over a half-century ago.
âFormerly, the child wanted to be like daddy or mommy. Now they skip you, they bypass you. They want to be like Superman.â
This testimony from Dr. Fredric Wertham on the connections between comic books and juvenile delinquency, and his earlier publications on the matter, helped to stoke a national hysteria around the lurid dangers of this once new medium. While barely a decade old, more than 90% of children between the ages of six and eleven read comic books, as did over 80% of teenagers. Parents in the Cold War era, unsure how to handle a variety of new social forces, found a convenient scapegoat in the colorful and ubiquitous magazines. Werthamâs testimony helped the Subcommittee to Investigate Juvenile Delinquency hold comic publishersâ feet to the fire and led not to new regulatory policies but a new industry-administered code of conduct that shaped comic books for over thirty years.
Generation after generation seems to go through its own âcycles of outrage,â whether with the waltz, pulp novels, comic books, rap music, or most recently with video games and online social networks. New mass media come and go, gaining relative acceptance or falling by the wayside, but concerns about the safety of children and regulations surrounding their freedoms never go away.
Virtual Worlds, practically non-existent just a few years ago, are just the latest commercial media to be seen as âcolonizingâ the lives of youth, once again raising a variety of concerns about their impact. The growth of youth involvement with virtual worlds is predicted to surpass 50% over the next few years, so one can expect a number of concerns to be raised about virtual worlds that are similar to the mediums of the past--a threat to law and order, a threat to traditional learning, and a threat to traditional values.

I personally think one reference example of a 2d platform that would be good for our game would be Sonic the Hedgehog.
1. Sonic the Hedgehog games make their characters move very swiftly and can run up platforms
2. The faster you run the more oportunites you get to do with your speed like run on water, run up wall, jump very far
I wouldn't say Sonic the Hedgehog is better than other 2d game platformers but it has better advantages as far as maneuvering wise stabitlity control than in other games. Also as long as you have a few rings or at least one ring with you, you can survive then it won't be too much of a problem
I think that it would be okay if we can use the elemnts from Sonic the Hedgehog except for the spindashing technique
1. We could use the loopdeloops from the game and the breaking platforms too.
2. We could use the wall run and water run along with the accelarators
What I ask of you not to put in from Sonic the Hedgehog
1. The rings, it doesn't matter much you collect if you get hit you lose all of your rings that you had.
2. If you can make the jump movements more fluid the that will be great.
I hope this reference plays a major roll in our platform game.
The platform game that is very good is Mario Bros because he is able to take a mushroom and Mario is able to get bigger, Mario can take a flower and and he can start to shoot fire out of his hands and the last item he uses is a cape with that item he is able to fly. Mario has to get past enemies like koopas and paratroopas. At the end Mario is able to face the boss named Browser who kidnapped Princess Peach. In order to save her you must defeat Browser.
Well This is the big hit for our project. ok well my fav. games are: (expl. on why they're my fav. Good n bad)
1.Ult Ghost n Goblins-
(good)
Its extremely hard to beat
plenty of enemies
The game pays you for earning high scores.
plenty of secrets
plenty of equipment to keep you alive(exp. Dark armor[unlimited r/b aura] empirial armor[4 hits to break] dragon shield [lets you fly])
(Bad)
Annoying scavenger hunt(looking for 33 golden light rings)
Some times Too Hard!!!
Better?: Its Psychoticly hard!!!!
Url: www.gamespot.com/psp/action/ghostsngoblins/index.html
2.Castlevania the draculaXcronicles-(good)
Games sound track is really good
game has plenty of secrets and many bosses as well as easter eggs
looks very good in grafx
creative levels
(Bad)
Game gets Old Fast (Very Fast)
kinda annoying looking for an invisable boss(The EX. Boss)
Better?:Very good sound track
Url: www.gamespot.com/psp/action/castlevaniathedraculaxchronicles
3. Megaman X 1-6-(Good)
A lot of levels
Depending on which boss you beat it affects other levels
Final boss feels like a final boss
(Bad)
Some times level desighn is alittle bit too ocward
First segment of the final level is too too dificult even w/ the ultimate armor.
Better?: The game never gets old

The date is Monday, March 31, of 2008 (finally the end of this month), and the geniuses of Global Kids' Playing 4 Keeps have contributed yet another round of ideas in order for the upcoming game to be complete. Since there are only an estimate of 8 kids in the group this evening, it should be a bit easy..(Session dedicated to Jay, who couldn't join us in today's festivities). Today, we took a bit of a review of all the platform games that we have played during the course of this epic project of extraordinary proportions, (Super Granny in Paradise, Shift, Fancy Pants Adventure, etc.), and our goal is to blog about it explaining why it seems better than other platformers such as Mario, Sonic, etc. My choice for the platform is a game known as "Territory War". This game is very unlikely for a platform game but it is a platform game nonetheless.

the reason why this is a good platformer game is because you have to use portals to get on to platforms. Another reason why it is a good platformer game is because it was very fun using the portals to get to other locations. It is better than any other because to me this game was much fun more than any other platformer i played. the way that they could use this game in the game we are making is that we could use a water bottle to open a portal into a house to save people. another way is that we could use some of the clothes that look riped or different colors. two ways to make this game better is that we could make the guy able to use the portal on other places to see a better way to get your destination.
We had some significant progress on our game this week at P4K! The game design continues to evolve and grow stronger. On Monday, we voted on both the gameâs art style, and the issues it will focus on. To choose the art style, we taped up images in a variety of different art styles. We had everything from Putomayo New Orleans jazz album covers to manga ninjas, watercolor paintings and Samurai Jack.
Each student was allowed to vote for his or her two favorites. In the end, a very detailed manga image received the most votes, with a more cartoony image from Dragon Ball Z and the Putomayo cover tying for second. I think our goal will be to have art like the Putomayo that is indicative of the New Orleans Jazz scene, and merge it with a more stylized, but simplified manga style. I think the result will look great.

With the release of ICED! (I Can End Deportation), an online interactive 3D role-playing game that teaches the player about current U.S. policies around immigration that destroy families and fundamental human rights, people have been not only playing it enthusiastically, but it is spurring others to search out other games for change.

This week at P4K was short but fun. On Monday we had a field trip to learn about game design from the pros. We traveled to Hunter College and Gamelab to see how games get from rough ideas, to polished downloadable.
Today the trip Hunter College's Game Lab was pretty cool, not only do they provide a variety of games but also knowledge of their designs and the steps to creating them.
The quote, "Don't judge a book by it's cover" took place today while I was viewing their games the game Hush was unique but deadly, by catching up with letters in order to save someone from being slaughtered. It was very simple but you have to press the letter in a few amount of seconds, so you have to be quick.
We went to a Hunter college where we saw 3 games. After that we went to Gamelab where we saw people working on games. Then we heard from a game artist and a game designer how they work.
We visited Tiltfactor and Gamelab. I thought it was very interesting. I found out that the Gamelab was the second largest casual gaming company in New York. When we visited the Tiltfactor, I found out that they teach classes in there and they attend annual gaming conferences.
This is the last blog entry from me. I will miss everyone and i will keep in touch. In p4k 2006 I am proud of all the accomplishments that we made in this class I am glad that everyone learned something new and different and had a chance to experience new and different things.I am thankful of all the achievements and chances that I have had. All I would like to say is THANK YOU to all the trainers for giving me the chance for these experiences. THANK YOU!
What I learned is that I can make difference in the world by helping others and get to learn more about the issue that is in the games.
I have learned this year how to make a video game with the help from my global kids, after school class and Gamelab. I have learned about poverty, education, haiti, etc. I've met alot of people this year and made a lot of friends. Sorry to say that this will be my last year, as a senior.
This my last blogg that I will be posting. I really have fun the past year I've spent with eveyone of you and I am going to miss you all alot. So please keep up the good work and hold your head up high. Good luck. Love Raniece
I had a good time at p4k this year, with the podcast, and the panel. Also just being in the program in general. Cant wait to see u next year.
During my conversations with the lovely girls next to me, I learned a lot from them, such as that they like many things about P4K, how this progam allowed them to grow as people and learn other computer skills, and about the complications of game playing.
one of the thing i will like to see diffrent next year is mostly what we talk about - more people to be more active and say what's on their mind (and the food should change). global kids should have more trips
My Favorite Highlight is going to the museum. It been a very good experience. I like the program a lot now that i'm graduating. I will miss the program.
i learned a lot from global kids this year and i met a lot of new people.im glad that i decided to dedicate my time to p4k.
the thing i learned is that we can make a game with a certain amount of money. i am proud that i became the summer intern. i hope i can do very good at the job for global kids
You can listen to the first
P4K podcast, featured in the upcoming Global Kids' Digital Media Initiative podcast series.

In yesterday's program, we talked about the possibility of adding cheat codes into the game. A cheat code is something you can do as a player to immediately advance - such as raising your level, or ability, or changing your location.
Many students liked the idea of having some cheat codes. DeWayne disagreed, saying a game with cheat codes is not a game. It is cheating.
Many of the GK Leaders, playing the Alpha, were frustrated by getting deep into debt. The idea was raised to have a cheat code to get oneself out of debt.
DeWayne responded, "The question is, in Haiti can you use a cheat code to get out of poverty?"
That settled that.
The
Alpha can now be viewed.

In today's program, we used games to familiarize ourselves with the new UNICEF report,
Child Alert: Haiti, which only came out last week. We also discussed why UNICEF chose this approach to educate people about issues in Haiti and how that was similar and different from our approach, using P4K.
We then explored Character Development, looking at sketches of our game's five family members, created by gameLab, and developed backstories for the different members.
Today we brainstormed some Haitian names we might use in the game.
Some names we came up with are:
Sweet Mickey
Jean
Marck

On Tuesday, March 28th, all were disappointed when a planned trip to the Microsoft offices in NYC was unexpectedly cancelled that very morning. However, we were able to have a nice conference call amongst all of the players.
Instead, we spent time during the program reviewing the content critique developed by Kiran, our content expert at Columbia's Teachers College, and did a scavenger hunt within the prototype looking for the errors or places of improvement.
For example, we learned that girls are unlikely to work as a mechanic, men are unlikely to work in the market (unless assisting a woman), and children are paid less than adults when working in a rum factory. However, none of this is yet reflected in the prototype. We learned about how the role of health care and education in the game could be improved, specific touches that would make it reflect Haitian culture more, and how gameLab will incorporate these specifics of Haitian culture into the next game build.
The photography that accompanied the piece was taken by Cameron Davidson, who is known for his commercial, editorial, and aerial work, as well as his documentation of the plight of the Haitian people in the town of Pignon, Haiti.
Such is what the world needs, the color of black and white coming together to make music, and purify the spirit of the people living within our world, for music is a stepping stone toward happiness.
Port-au-Prince, 25 March 2004 - The first shipment of urgently needed food aid has departed the Haitian capital today, destined for the northern city of Cap Haitien where it will be distributed to 181,000 vulnerable people in the north of the country.
